The People’s Reviews: Backlash ’07 & Backlash ’08
Backlash always kicks ass. As a fan stated on this site, it’s like Wrestlemania but with all the bullshit trimmed. I’ve already posted my review of Backlash 2009, which is hands down one of the Top 10 greatest PPVs ever. So, I thought we’d go down memory lane and look at the other two Backlashes that I own. Let’s hop on the good foot…
WWE Tag-Team Championship: The Hardys [C] vs. Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch
You know, Lance & Trevor were pretty fucking awesome. Every now and then when I do a review of an older PPV I’ll come across one of their bouts and love the hell out of it. This was no exception. Hardys were in fine form, as par for the course.

WWE Women’s Championship: Melina [C] vs. Mickie James
Two of the better women’s wrestlers who were just out there for too long. Shave a couple minutes off and we might have had something here

US Championship: Chris Benoit [C] vs. MVP
To be honest, I don’t really like Chris Benoit all that much, I also don’t understand what all the hooplah is surrounding MVP. I’ve rarely seen a performance from him that I dig, and this is no exception. Some people like’em, so I can dig why it’s here.

ECW World Championship: Bobby Lashley [C] vs. Team McMahon [Vince, Shane, Umaga]
Ugh. Why on EARTH did Vince think people wanted to plunk down money to watch this horseshit?
World Heavyweight Championship: The Undertaker [C] vs. Batista
This is the stuff that Backlash, and dreams, are made of. The Batista/Undertaker series of matches is probably my all time favorite. Every time they stepped in the ring, they never delivered less than 4 and a quarter. This was the pinnacle, for me. An unbelievable match where they went full tilt, and tore the fucking house down. Literally.

WWE Championship: John Cena [C] vs. Edge vs. Randy Orton vs. Shawn Micheals
Hell yeah, man. I prefer 4-ways that are elimination style, but I have no problem with this bad boy. All 20 minutes was non-stop action, and the ending was great. The culmination of finishers and a passed out Cena squeaking out the win was awesome.

Final Rating: * * * * 1/4th. Solid undercard match, and two incredible main events. Backlash brings the goods, as usual.
US Championship: MVP [C] vs. Matt Hardy
Of course, up there I talk about MVP never delivering the goods, and then he does. This was a fantastic opener, and one that obviously I didn’t expect in the slightest.

ECW Championship: Kane [C] vs. Chavo
I love Chavo, and I hate Kane. The fact he’s been able to collect a check for 13 years is baffling to me. It was also great that he got to squash Chavo. Because, you know, Kane is big.

The Big Show vs. The Great Khali
REALLY? They gave 8:05 to two of the slowest fucking wrestlers ever? Ugh.
Shawn Micheals vs. Batista w/ Special Guest Ref Chris Jericho
This was a great angle, I thought. It’s not exactly something that you could use to coast on for a whole year, but for the couple months it’s great. I love when Shawn acts like a devious dick to get the win, it’s awesome. This also started the feud with Jericho, which, as we know, was God like.

Beth Phoenix, Melina, Layla, Jillian Hall, Victoria, Natalya vs. Mickie James, Maria, Ashley, Michelle McCool, Cherry, Kelly Kelly
It’s a twelve Diva tag match, so, what is there to say, really?
Rating: * 1/2th
World Heavyweight Championship: The Undertaker [C] vs. Edge
The only series of matches that could match Taker/Batista is Taker/Edge. Every time they stepped up to bat, it was a 4 and a half star event. It culminated in a 5 star Hell in a Cell classic. This was damn near as great as their Wrestlemania classic. Fantastic ending that showed Taker can be just as brutal as anyone.

WWE Championship: Randy Orton [C] vs. JBL vs. Triple H vs. John Cena
Maaan, did this kick a lot of ass. I love that they finally went with an elimination style of 4-way, as it just works better. The spot where JBL got in Orton’s face and was telling him to tap, then the roles reversed was excellent. I also love that Cena was eliminated, as you know everyone expected Cena to take it back here. I just wish there was more time between the elimination of Cena & JBL. The true stars of this match are Triple H & Orton, they went out there and tore the fucking place down once it was just them. It just goes to show of what a mess Wrestlemania 25 was, because alone, they are more than capable of tearing the house apart. Great main event.

Final Rating: * * * * 1/2th. Solid undercard, incredible main events, Backlash once again proves it’s badassness. Soak it up, baby.
