The Horror Section – A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors

Year: 1987
Director: Chuck Russel
Stars: Robert Englund, Heather Langenkamp, and Patricia Arquette

We’re the Dream Waaaarriors, don’t waaanna dream no mooooreee!

When people talk A Nightmare on Elm Street, the 3 films that always come up as being the best are 1, 3, and 7. These are the ones that Wes Craven had a hand in, so that’s no surprise. Part 3, The Dream Warriors, is often times even considered the best of the series. It has a bigger cast, a bigger story, more effects and a ton of action.

The story takes place at a mental health facility where kids who’ve had encounters with Freddy are living. One by one, Freddy comes to them in their dreams and does what he does best. However, the kids have a weapon, a new staff member, Nancy Thomspon. She’s delt with Freddy before, and she’s here to finish the job.

I can easily see why people think this one is the best, because to be honest, it is. Freddy isn’t a buffoon yet, there’s plenty of fodder for him to kill, the story line is action packed, and the effects/kills are some of the best of the series.

One of the things that help out this film is the character played Patricia Arquette. She has the power to draw other people into her dreams, so that way we get more than just one on one with Freddy. Not only that, but Nancy teaches them to be able to control their dreams and become whatever they want, thus, The Dream Warriors. It creates a lot of interesting fights with Freddy, from a Dungeon Master, to a punk-rock chick with double switch blades. Let’s get high…

We also find something out about Freddy, and why he’s known as the Bastard Son of a 1,000 Maniacs.

I really can’t stress enough about how kick-ass this movie is. It’s one of those horror films you can watch multiple times, and always have a shit ton of fun with. It’s honestly like an action film in some ways. It’s worth your time, trust me.

Oh, and as an extra bonus, it’s got the bad-ass theme song by none other than hair-metal legends, Dokken!
